The landscape is made up of 3
natural areas, the mountains and the
valleys, wooded slopes and plains.
The views are breathtaking. The
mountain covers half the department
and to the south forms the border
with Spain. There
are 35 peaks over 3000 m: the
highest being "le Pic du Vignemale"
(3298 m). From west to east, valleys
cut through the landscape. In the
west : the Gave or Levedon rivers
form large valleys from Lourdes to
Argelès-Gazost. In the center, the
Campan valley, dominated by the "Pic
du Midi" the col of Tourmalet, the
Néouvieille and l'Arbizon ranges .
To the east : the Neste valley
unfolds to Arreau where the Aure and
Louron valleys meet . These valleys
provide the access to Spain. They
are linked to each other by high
passes (Soulor, Tourmalet, Aspin,
Peyresourde).
The Haute Pyrenees
department also has many beatifull
places of natural or cultural
interest. Some of them are
classified by UNESCO as heritage
sites. They are well worth a visit. |
